About The Great Ridge Walk

Beginning from the National Trust car park at Mam Nick the walk is well signed and begins with a 600 metre ascent to the summit of Mam Tor, (the site of an Iron Age hill fort with the ramparts and other earthworks still clearly visible) where you’ll soon begin to appreciate the panoramic views this walk has to offer.

Mam Tor is known locally as the ‘Shivering Mountain’ as it moves at the pace of about 1 metre every 5 years leading to considerable landslides, one of which destroyed part of the main A625, the wrecked road can be seen and is a real eye opener! From here a clearly defined path leads you on across the ridge to Hollins Cross (a noticeable dip on the ridge) and another key vantage point to soak up the views – look north to the impressive Kinder Scout and Edale or south to the villages of Castleton and Hope.

Continue on and up the incline of Back Tor and along the summit of Lose Hill – again the views from here are simply beautiful and the terrain a little gentler. From Lose Hill simply follow your footsteps back along the ridge and back over Mam Tor to the car park.

Make sure you visit Castleton before you leave, the road winds down to the village through the stunning Winnatts Pass and once you arrive there are good pubs, cafes and shops and also several show caverns to enjoy, including Speedwell Cavern where you are taken on an incredible underground boat journey 450 metres under the hills of Castleton to the awesome Bottomless Pit.
